Choose the right kind of AI

Match the capability and effort level to the task instead of assuming the newest or deepest model is automatically better.

Fast, reasoning, research, image, voice and coding systems trade cost, latency and capability differently.

The product around a model can matter as much as the model itself.

The practical bit

Use fast general assistance for low-stakes drafting and transformation. Use deeper reasoning only when the task benefits from multi-step analysis and the additional time or cost earns value. Use research capabilities when current sourced information matters.

Specialist image, voice and coding systems may fit their medium better. For repeatable software workflows, consider an API only after the process, checks, volume and economics are understood.

What it looks like

At work

A quick internal rewrite does not need the most expensive reasoning mode. A complex decision memo may justify deeper analysis, multiple sources and explicit review.

In everyday life

Voice can be useful for capturing ideas while walking; a research tool is more suitable when comparing current travel rules and prices.

Choosing from a leaderboard before defining the task, product surface, data boundary, budget and checking method.
